Rolls-Royce's New Luxury Boat
At the 2018 Monaco Yacht Club Monaco Yacht Show, we were lucky enough to see the prototype of a brand-new luxury speedboat from Rolls-Royce. This latest creation by the British luxury engine manufacturer boasts a jaw-dropping design that you simply cannot find elsewhere. Its long, sleek lines and elegant curves would be enough to make even the most ardent of boaters envious.
But there's more. This new flagship from RR boasts extensive technology embedded into the design to make it safer, more comfortable, and more efficient. This includes the use of lightweight materials and cutting-edge composites. It also features the brand's new Active Noise Reduction, which eliminates the need for expensive headsets or earplugs for the passenger who is seated behind the pilot's seat. As well as the pilot, there are two more seats in the front for the captain and the co-pilot. So there are ultimately five seats on board this luxurious luxury ribs for up to five passengers. It also features four berths – each with an overhead locker and its own private head – so even the most discerning of travelers can bring their gear with them.
The Design
The luxury yacht is a unique creation, part of a new generation of superyacht that boasts a distinctive and futuristic design. The sleek and slender design of the ship is certainly unique. It features the brand's now-famous "dual-plane" wing, which features two sets of wings, one above the other. This stunning design was first seen on the now-legendary Blackbird helicopter back in the 1950s.
The shape of the ship gives it a sleek and slender silhouette. It features two sets of swept-back wings, which extend all the way to the waterline. They feature an elegant curve that give it a sensual quality. They are designed to create a stable platform for the boater above the water. This enables the ship to fly like a bat and maneuver like a skilled Navy SEAL.
These sleek and elegant curves are also responsible for the high levels of discomfort that the occupants of the vessel must experience. Due to their weight, they put a strain on the vessel's structure and the boaters seated within. To counter this, Rolls-Royce has engineered the new luxury boat to be heavier but more rigid, using strong composites and lightweight structural materials. This enables the vessel to flex and adapt to the weight of the boaters inside, while also providing a smoother and more comfortable ride.
The Inflatable Sections
There are three distinct sections to this luxurious boat. The first is the control room, located in the front of the plane. Here, the captain and the co-pilot have all the controls and monitoring devices at their disposal. There are two large windows on either side of the room, which offer commanding views of the open water. The center console features a large display screen that provides vital navigational information to the pilots. There is also a smaller monitor at the foot of each seat for the passengers.
The second section is the lounge area, which is located in the middle of the ship. The cockpit has been moved here, and provides the opportunity for the boaters to enjoy a meal and drinks with friends. There is also a small ice-maker located here, so that after a long day on the water, the boaters can have some refreshing drinks served at their fingertips.
The third section is the sleeping area, which is where the four passengers can snuggle down for the evening and enjoy a peaceful night's sleep. There is also a large sliding glass door here, which can be opened up to offer spectacular views of the moonlight reflecting off the water's surface.
The Hybrid Motor System
To propel this new luxury boat, Rolls-Royce has developed a hybrid motor system that combines fuel cells with a battery bank. This enables the vessel to fly for longer, while also lowering its carbon footprint. This is due to the fact that while battery-only electric vehicles are extremely practical, they require a lot of charging, which creates a lot of unnecessary carbon emissions.
The fuel cells used here are of the platinum metal variety. This means that the boat can stay alight for around 30 minutes, while offering a cruising range of more than 500 miles. But the most innovative part of this hybrid propulsion system is the way in which it handles the braking. The system integrates both hydraulic and electric braking, which enables the vessel to come to a complete stop in half the distance of a standard hydrojet boat. This saves a massive amount of fuel, and ultimately makes this combination less environmentally damaging.
The Active Noise Reduction
We couldn't talk about this boat without mentioning the Active Noise Reduction (ANR) system that Rolls-Royce has engineered here. This innovative system is what enables the luxury boat to achieve such flawless maneuvering and handling. Active noise reduction is a method of attenuating sound that is more effective than simply using sound-cancelling headphones or earplugs. When riders are wearing these devices, their own body heat can cause them to overheat, which in turn can cause them to temporarily lose their balance and control of the machine. The Active Noise Reduction system is what makes this boat possible. It uses ultra-modern sound-cancelling headphones and earplugs, which completely seal off the ear canal, keeping the riders cool while also blocking out the sound of the engine and the water around them.
The best part is that the entire ANR system can be controlled wirelessly from a smartphone. This means that even when the boaters are wearing sound-cancelling devices, they can still access and control all of the ship's systems from their mobiles. The system has already been through extensive testing, and enables the crew of the boat to communicate with complete confidence while underwater. This in turn allows for safer and more comfortable boating experiences.
The Inbuilt Emergency Procedures
One of the most important things to consider about this luxury ship is the fact that it is safe and easy to navigate. This is because the designers have taken the time to think of everything, including the smallest details. Every control on the ship can be operated using simple touch screens, while the boat's onboard computer can be accessed using a mobile phone data connection. This design decision enables the boat to operate even if there is no connection available, ensuring that critical functions can still be performed.
The designers installed four large displays around the inside of the cockpit. These displays provide vital information about the vessel's systems to the pilot. To the right of the pilot, there is an additional small display that can be used for communicating with other boaters or for accessing other critical information. All of this is easily viewable while wearing sound-cancelling headphones or earplugs. In case of an emergency, the boat can be easily evacuated using the aircraft's life rafts and lifesaving equipment, including an inflatable liferaft. There are also various emergency beacons and strobes that can be activated in case of trouble underwater or in the air. This provides an extra measure of confidence for the boaters.
There are four distinct and distinctively-shaped floats located at the rear of the boat. These act as fins, which are what give the ship its name, the "fin whale." They are designed to increase the vessel's stability while underwater and enable it to reach high speeds. There are also two retractable landing gear, which have a span of up to 12 feet, enabling the vessel to land on water as long as 12 feet deep. Another innovative feature is the use of an inclined deck. This is what gives this boat its unique shape. In case of an engine failure, the boat is equipped with a twin-pulse jet propulsion system, which provides extreme propulsion underwater. This twin-pulse system enables the boat to reach speeds in excess of 40 knots, and give it an extraordinary maneuvering capability.
The Remote Control
One of the most exciting things about this boat is the fact that it is completely controlled wirelessly from a smartphone. Simply download the necessary app, and you are good to go. There is no need to touch anything or to have someone at the helm. The entire process, from take-off to landing, is handled wirelessly. This is what makes this boat truly exceptional.
The app enables the remote pilot to select the settings for the vessel, including its speed, the amount of thrust, and the pitch of the boat's propellers. In case of an accident or malfunction, the entire system can be examined and diagnosed using the smartphone's built-in camera. This is an extremely useful tool for anyone who owns a boat, but it's also a safe and reliable way for the crew to inspect and maintain the vessel in case of any problems.
